No damage following Tuesday morning storms

BRANCH COUNTY — Tornado sirens blared twice Tuesday morning in Branch County with warnings issued by the National Weather Service for the area.

Just after 8 a.m., the first warning reported that radar spotted rotation in clouds from northeast St. Joseph County into Sherwood Township.

No one visually spotted a tornado in the area that suffered major tornado damage on May 7.

A second alert went out around 9:30 a.m. with rotations in another heavy thunderstorm cell moving across the county's southwest corner.

That storm cell caused a Consumers Energy power outage for 3,300 customers, which lasted an hour and a half, generally from M-86 south between the west county line and Batavia Road.

A certified storm spotter saw a funnel cloud in Kinderhook Township that did not touch down.

That storms moved toward Fremont and Clear Lake Indiana, prompting tornado warnings there.

There were reports of a few power lines down but no major wind or tree damage.

Short, heavy bursts of rain pooled water on roads and streets, and Coldwater Municipal Service crews cleared drains.

Less than a quarter inch registered at reporting rain gauges.

The biggest problem was that Kid's Day at the Branch County Fair did not start until Tuesday afternoon.

At the usual 10 a.m. start, the ride midway was empty, and there were puddles of water in the area.

Clearing and cooler temperatures are expected to increase crowds for the rest of the week.
