COLDWATER – Week one of Branch County High School football is officially behind us, and with that first week of action came a quick glimpse into what we as fans can expect from our guys on the gridiron every Friday night under the lights.

With that one week under our belts, it is even more impressive that one of the best performers of week one has been honored by you, the readers, as our 2024 The Daily Reporter Preseason Football Player of the Year.

The winner of this year’s preseason vote, which garnered nearly 27K votes, is Coldwater quarterback Dracyn Foster who won running away with the poll, netting 33% of the vote.

Foster comes to the Cardinal varsity roster as a highly heralded sophomore who has made a name for himself on the 7-on-7 circuit and in quarterback camps. The young man enters the season ranked in the top 10 of pro-style quarterbacks for the 2027 class according to the website QB Hit List.

Foster did not disappoint and showed flashes of that promise in Coldwater’s week one win over rival Sturgis, as the sophomore slinger completed 6 of 20 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns with only one interception. Foster threw touchdown passes of 62, 64, and 34 yards to lead the Cardinals to victory.

“Dracyn (Foster) did a great job during the summer at quarterback and with having some kids who can catch I think we are going to see some different things on offense this year,” Coldwater head coach Jeff Schorfhaar said.

Finishing in second place in the preseason football player of the year poll is a teammate of Foster’s as offensive/defensive lineman Garrett McVicker took runner-up honors with just over 19% of the vote.

Josh Bailey of Tekonsha finished in third place with just over 14% of the vote.
