There’s no such thing as a bad view from the 2024 Southern Living Idea House in Kiawah River, a coastal community just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Out front, a live oak stretches its moss-covered limbs, reaching towards the neighboring farm. Behind, Abbapoola Creek laps the marshy shoreline, welcoming abundant wildlife. This natural wonderland dictated nearly every choice we made as we built our Sea Island farmhouse, from its careful position on the lot to the earthy color palette and scenery-highlighting windows. Read on to meet the Palmetto State visionaries who brought our salty, storied Idea House to life.

One of my ultimate dreams is to be able to own a summer or vacation house in an area surrounded by nature. At the rate my life plans are going that will remain a dream but it doesn’t hurt to look at all the well-designed summer houses, specifically the ones in Europe. Most of these use sustainable materials and are built to be part of the natural landscape so those are major plus points.

Alisa and Kevin’s DIY conversion of a 1996 BlueBird school bus, named “Hygge,” beautifully embodies the Danish concept of coziness and contentment. The exterior of the bus is painted off-white and remains largely unchanged, save for some windows replaced with metal panels and the addition of solar panels on the roof. However, the interior transformation is where the magic happens. The couple has designed a bright and inviting living space with white cabinetry and wooden accents, following a “side-by-side” room layout that includes a charming seating area, a functional kitchen with a rolling pantry, a bathroom with a composting toilet and shower, and a cozy bedroom with ample storage.
