PORT CHARLOTTE — A GoFundMe started for Sweet's Diner has raised more than $8,000 after the driver of an SUV smashed through its storefront a week ago.

A young driver learning how to drive plowed through the diner and caused immense damage.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Aug. 8. The eatery was closed and nobody was inside. A staff member who was outside when it happened heard a loud bang.

    Sweet's sustained significant damage.

Owner Scott Sweet said he was hoping for donations to keep paying his staff while repairs are underway.

Insurance is set to cover some of the damages, he said. But until a check comes, his workers need compensation.

Sweet said he appreciates the support he has received.

"The community loves us," he said. "I’m happy for my staff."

Hiram's Grille at 115 and Punta Gorda Masonic Lodge No. 115 are hosting a fundraiser, Sweet said. He said he doesn't even know the other restaurant owner.

The fundraiser takes place from 3-9 p.m. Aug. 23 at the lodge, 25349 Airport Road, Punta Gorda.

It will offer dinners with two slices of meatloaf, whipped potatoes, mushroom gravy and Florida sweet corn. A donation of $15 is suggested.

The day after the wreck, people, including staff and customers, were working to bring the diner back.

It has been around for 17 years and has regulars who eat there daily.

The establishment at 2320 Tamiami Trail remains closed.

But Sweet hopes things can be up and running again.
