PORT CHARLOTTE — "Home-Goods for Heroes" will be supporting area veterans through a new initiative.

According to a recent news release, through local collaboration, sponsors are organizing the event "to support the Veterans of Volunteers of America of Florida at Punta Gorda Veterans Village."

"'Home-Goods for Heroes,' is designed to supply essential home items to formally unhoused veterans transitioning into civilian life," it stated.

A total of 16 businesses and organizations are volunteering to be drop-off locations for items, the news release stated.

The last day to give the items is Nov. 22. But before then, there will be opportunities to drop them off or take part in community efforts.

One community event takes place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 26 at Bert's Black Widow Harley-Davidson. It will also feature food, fun and activities, the news release stated.

"This special event will not only entertain but will enable the entire community to come together and contribute to a meaningful cause," it stated.

The items will be given to the Volunteers of America of Florida Punta Gorda Veterans Village on Dec. 6, during which area veterans will be celebrated, it noted. That event will also include light refreshments and complimentary haircuts for the veterans, it said.

    Among those taking part include:
