ADRIAN — Proper disposal of unwanted vehicle tires is essential for the health and safety of Lenawee County residents and the environment.

To make sure there is an opportunity for people to properly get rid of their passenger vehicle tires, a tire collection event is taking place from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in Adrian at Lenawee County Recycling Drop-Off Site , 307 River St., at the corner of River and Race streets.

The program is available to Lenawee County residents only, and they can bring up to 10 tires per vehicle collected for a nominal fee. Clean passenger vehicle and light truck tires will be collected for $2 each, according to a news release from the Lenawee County Health Department .

Tires can be on or off the rim. Tires from commercial sources will not be accepted, and leaving tires after the collection period has concluded is an example of illegal dumping, which is a punishable offense, the health department warned.

“The tire recycling program is a great resource for our community. By providing residents with an economical, easy way to properly dispose of old tires, this program helps address illegal dumping in our county and is funded by a grant from the Scrap Tire Cleanup Project through The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE),” the health department said.

Scrap tires, especially those that are piled on top of each other, can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests. They also pose a serious fire hazard, the health department said.

All tires collected at the event will be recycled into materials such as playground and landscape applications, rubberized asphalt road projects, in-fill material for synthetic athletic fields, and rubber chips for septic fields and other engineered projects.

“Residents are encouraged to dispose of old tires when purchasing new tires at the retailer,” according to the health department.
