TECUMSEH — This coming weekend two favorite autumnal fruits will be the centerpieces of two of Lenawee County's longest-running festivals.

Kapnick Orchard's Apple Festival and Tecumseh's Appleumpkin Festival will feature their usual lineup of arts and crafts, live entertainment, family-friendly activities and all sorts of food — and not just food derived from apples and pumpkins.

When and where are the festivals happening?

    Both festivals take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Kapnick's store will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the orchards' website .

Kapnick Orchards is at 4245 Rogers Highway. The Appleumpkin Festival takes place on several streets in downtown Tecumseh.

There will be free shuttle buses running between the two festivals. The downtown shuttle stop is at the corner of South Pearl Street and West Chicago Boulevard. Parking at Kapnick's will be on the farm off Sutton Road. A $3 donation is requested. Proceeds will be given to a local charity. Parking for Appleumpkin is available in the downtown area as well as at Tecumseh High School, which has entrances at 760 Brown St. and off West Chicago Boulevard next to the Speedway gas station. Shuttles will run between the high school and downtown. The Tecumseh Area Historical Museum at 302 E. Chicago Blvd. will have its parking lot available for a $5 or more donation to support the museum's operations. Handicap-accessible parking is available at the Old National Bank office, 205 E. Chicago Blvd.

What activities are at the festivals?

Many Appleumpkin activities are scheduled to take place around downtown. Inflatables will be set up along East Shawnee Street between North Evans and North Ottawa streets, helicopter rides will be offered at the Tecumseh Middle School baseball field off North Evans Street, a petting zoo is planned on North Ottawa Street across from the library, and monster truck rides will be offered on West Logan Street between North Evans and Pearl streets, according to the festival map . Midway rides and carnival games will be in the northeast parking lot. Wristbands will be available for purchase. Free kids activities in the northeast parking lot include kids minigolf, a corn box and make-it, take-it crafts.

More than 30 acoustic musical acts — 12 from Lenawee County — are lined up to play at Appleumpkin on three outdoor stages: the Library Stage at Tecumseh District Library, 215 N. Ottawa St.; the Ottawa Street Stage at the corner of Ottawa Street and East Chicago Boulevard; and the Shuttle Stage at the corner of South Pearl Street and West Chicago Boulevard. The performances run throughout the course of the festival.

At Kapnick's, guests can pick their own apples and pumpkins, visit the farm animals and take a wagon ride through the orchard and Halloween Woods. The wagon ride is $3 per person; children 2 and younger are free. In the store, apple cider will be pressed, and caramel apples will be made.

What kind of crafts and vendors will be there?

Kapnick's will have more than 80 crafts booths, while Appleumpkin will have artists and other vendors lined up on Chicago Boulevard between Pearl and Oneida streets, on Evans Street between Pottawatamie and Shawnee streets, and on Ottawa Street between Pottawatamie and North Evans streets. Downtown Tecumseh's shops also will be open. Vendors also will be at the Market on Evans, 213 N. Evans St.

What food will be at the festivals?

To go along with Kapnick Orchards' usual fare of apples, cider and bakery treats, food vendors at the Apple Festival will include elephant ears, french fries, hot dogs, tacos, barbecue, pulled pork, Polish sausage, kettle corn and roasted almonds. Appleumpkin will have fair food vendors, plus the downtown restaurants will be open. American Legion Underwood-Orr Post 34 will have its annual chicken broil Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. or whenever the food is sold out. Dinners are $10 each and include a quarter chicken, baked beans, cole slaw and a roll. It is open to the public.
