Alcoa approves additional Hall Road development plans
Changes are coming to the intersection of North Hall Road and West Bessemer Street. After gaining approval from the Alcoa Planning Commission last week, Blackhorse Pub and Brewery owners are set to install additions to the beer garden on the pub grounds with a mixed-use development nearby. The proposed three-story building as drawn will provide a mix of residential and commercial use and will face North Hall Road to the south of the pub. Developers hope to begin work when interest rates become more attainable. ...
Blount Memorial Hospital hopes to expand outpatient surgery space
Four consecutive months in the black have left Blount Memorial Hospital’s leaders hopeful that the fiscal year closes on a positive financial note and makes some space for expansion. One specific goal is growing an outpatient surgery center located a few hundred yards from the main building. Interim hospital CEO Jonathan Smith noted in a board meeting Tuesday, April 23, that recent months have gone relatively well for Blount Memorial in financial terms. The hospital marked its best month in years in February, and in...
The job and the pay: Who's in the schools' central offices?
When people think about education, they think of the classrooms. They don’t consider the work required to ensure the students and teachers are there, in working facilities, with the resources they need, while the district meets all the state and federal requirements for serving children and spending taxpayer dollars. Ask the people ensuring all those things happen about how central offices are staffed in our local public schools and one word repeats: lean. Behind simple job titles are a range of responsibilities for each. ...
The job and the pay: A look at Blount County, Maryville and Alcoa school directors
The director of a public school district is much like the CEO of a company, providing leadership, setting the vision and reinforcing the organization’s culture. However, you also may find them up early enough to make the call on whether to close schools because of a snowstorm or find them at a ball game at night talking with students and their families. School district performance is tracked through multiple types of data. Attendance and absentee reports show whether students are showing up. State assessments report...

He took part in the battles of Long Island, New York; Trenton, New Jersey; and Brandywine and Germantown in Pennsylvania. John’s service coincided with a bleak time in our country’s fight for independence. The Continental Army only narrowly got away after its defeat at Long Island. Trenton was a morale booster as Washington...

Remembering the Ramseys: Greenback marks legacy of love, kindness
Only three weeks ago, the town of Greenback tragically lost two influential pillars of the community when they were murdered at their home. James “Chipper” Ramsey, 78, and Betty Ramsey, 75, have been described as two bright lights in a darkened world; and even in their passing, the couple’s influence and light still shines on those who loved them. Chipper and Betty were high school sweethearts at Greenback School and...

Townsend drafting new hotel, campground definitions
Townsend could change its legal definitions of hotels and campgrounds amid public displeasure at the approval of a proposed hotel development in city limits. In a work session Monday night, April 22, the Townsend Planning Commission made plans for new definitions to balance public opinion and necessity. The proposed hotel definition would closely match a definition from the state, and the campground definition would reflect modern forms of camping including glamping and semi-permanent camp structures. ...
