Waterford ― The town’s Recreation and Parks Department cautioned residents not to swim at Waterford Beach Park after testing on Monday by the Ledge Light Health District revealed high levels of bacteria in the water.

The test results caused the health district to place an advisory on the beach Tuesday afternoon.

Hole-in-the-Wall Beach in Niantic also received an advisory, but will not be closed to swimming, according to the East Lyme Parks and Recreation Department.

The water at both beaches will be retested Wednesday morning, said health district Director Jennifer Muggeo. Results will be available late Thursday or early Friday. If the bacteria results are within acceptable limits, the advisories will be lifted.

She said the elevated levels are typically the result of heavy rainfall and clear up by the next testing.
