Castle Pines' No. 16 sees good, bad, ugly shots on Friday | BMW Championship notebook

CASTLE PINES — Golfers treated the patrons at Castle Pines’ 16th hole to good, bad and ugly shots in Friday’s second round of the BMW Championship.

Many shots on the 229-yard, par 3 were on the green. Others landed in the water or the sand — or even the grandstands.

Wyndham Clark is one who played the hole exceptionally.

With a 6 iron, the Denver native threw a dart onto the green on his tee shot, missing out on an ace by just 11 inches. He, without trouble, escaped the hole with a birdie.

Clark said the wind switched right before his shot, forcing him to question his club selection. It’s safe to say he made the right call.

“I didn't think it was going to get that far,” Clark said. “Then to walk up there and have it be only 6 (actually 11) inches was a nice delight.”

Not that he will likely see the hole as positive, but Austin Eckroat likely had the coolest bogey of the day on hole 16.

Eckroat’s tee shot went in the water. So he had to take a drop and hit from a forward tee box for his third shot. Eckroat hit a pristine shot from 101 yards out, missing the cup by a few inches and leaving it 7 feet from the pin.

The 25-year-old made the 7-footer and saved his bogey.

Max Homa bogeyed hole 16, too, but his was less pretty.

His tee shot went wayward to the left, actually landing in the grandstand behind the green. Because that’s a man-made hazard, Homa was allowed to drop in the rough, a club length away from the grandstand.

His chip, though, left him an 18-foot putt, which he didn’t make.

Of the 49 golfers who competed on Friday (Hideki Matsuyama withdrew prior to the round), 32 made par. Seven golfers parred, while 10 birdied.

Scheffler, Schauffele struggle in Round 2

Despite respectively holding the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the World Golf Rankings and the FedEx Cup Standings, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele didn’t play their best golf in Round 2.

Scheffler, a six-time PGA Tour winner this year, shot even par (72) for the day after shooting 71 on Thursday. The 28-year-old made five birdies on the round, but he also logged three bogeys and one double bogey.

He is tied for 29th heading into the weekend.

Schauffele played the front 9 well, shooting a two-under 34. But, aside from a birdie on hole 11, he struggled on the back. Schauffele made five bogeys to finish with a 73 for the day.

Schauffele is 2-under par, tied for 23rd.

Bradley still in reach after solid second round

Keegan Bradley no longer has the lead, but he’s still in contention.

After shooting a round-best 66 on Thursday, Bradley shot 68 on Friday. He sits in second place at 10-under, three strokes behind Adam Scott.

Bradley notched five birdies in Round 2, four of which came on the back nine. But Bradley picked up his first bogey of the week on hole 18, when he left his approach shot short of the green.

Still Bradley, entered the clubhouse content after two under-par rounds to start the tournament.

“It just feels like I'm playing a regular event in the middle of the season, which is a nice relief,” Bradley said.

Bradley entered the week 50th in the FedEx Cup Standings. He now is projected to enter the final event, the Tour Championship, in 11th place.

“Yeah, I just have basically hit every shot the way I wanted this week,” Bradley said. “(My) game feels really good. It's really fun to play in front of these fans. It's been a lot of fun.”
