'Dub Club' invades Castle Pines to cheer on Denver's Wyndham Clark

CASTLE PINES — "Let's go, Dub!" was loud and clear on the fifth hole of Castle Pines Golf Club.

Denver native Wyndham Clark, who showed his Broncos fandom by wearing orange and blue on Saturday at the BMW Championship, had just made birdie and his cheering section of several hundred family and friends let him know they were there to support him.

"We always have a good following at tournaments, but we've always kind of wanted something to capture the moment here," Brendan Clark, Wyndham's younger brother, said. "It was actually his girlfriend's (Alicia Bogdanski) idea to make some hats and hand them out to people."

The hats were white with pink lettering that said "Dub Club" on the front. The backs of the hats said "Play Big." The letter is pink to honor Wyndham and Brendan's mother, Lise Clark, who died of breast cancer in 2013.Wyndham got emotional after his first PGA Tour win at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2023 and said, "I wished she could have been there."

"The pink is for my mom and on the back, play big, is kind of like his motto," Brendan said. "We got those together and it's been great. It's been a big hit."

Several of the hats were seen in the crowd, including one worn by Celtics star and Wyndham's childhood friend Derrick White, who came out for the third consecutive day to follow Wyndham's group.

"It's honestly one of those pinch-yourself moments because we were in third grade all the way to high school playing basketball against each other, and you would almost never think that he'd be at the highest level and I would be at the highest level at my sport. And two kids coming out of Colorado, it doesn't happen very often," Wyndham said.Even Wyndham noticed the crowds wearing the hat. Stephanie James, Wyndham's cousin, said Wyndham's management team and Mark Wahlberg's brand MUNICIPAL, which is one of Wyndham's sponsors, put the hats together. "Dub" is a nickname that started for him back when he was winning two state golf titles at Valor Christian High School.

"I'm trying to make eye contact (with the crowd) as much as possible," Wyndham said. "Golf is so tough — not that I'm at this level, but I feel a little bit like how Tiger is because he always had the most amazing fan support. And he would be walking through and everyone is pumping him up, and you get your levels raised up so much. So it's been really tough for me to just calm down before I hit my next shot."But I feel like I've done a good job with it. And hopefully tomorrow I can keep my nerves down."

The roars on the front nine were nothing compared to those on the 17th hole when Wyndham dropped an eagle putt to move to 7-under. He is in a tie for fifth place but sits five shots behind leader Keegan Bradley.

"It has been incredibly fun," James said. "We have quite the hype squad out here. We have seen his Valor friends and all kinds of people while walking with him.

"The Dub Club kind of just happened, and now he has a chant."

The crowd support for Wyndham has been strong all week. He has received loud ovations at almost every hole. This is the first time the Denver native has played in his home state on the PGA Tour.

"It's been amazing every day, honestly," he said. "Even in the practice rounds, it's been so awesome. Then obviously having my immediate family and then close friends that don't usually get to come out and watch me play, it was really nice. The hometown support has been amazing."Clark is set to be in the third to last group and paired with two-time major winner Xander Schauffele for the final round. They tee off at 11:10 a.m. Sunday.
