Pueblo Chile Festival is still weeks away, but you don't have to wait that that long, or drive that far, if you're craving the smell and flavor of roasted chiles.

You can test your spice tolerance, sample salsas and treat yourself to pie this Saturday at Quesadilla Day hosted by Spencer's Lawn and Garden Centers.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the store's Ivywild-area location at 1430 S. Tejon St.

While Spencer's Lawn and Garden Center celebrated its 90th anniversary earlier this year, Quesadilla Day is a newer event, going on about 20 years, according to Spencer's Owner Heather Gunnerson.

The family-run business decided to start Quesadilla Day in response to Pueblo's chile festival. Since Spencer's highlights Colorado produce, you won't find hatch chiles at the event, but you will find chiles from Pueblo and Palisade. Attendants can try the various chiles for free before deciding on what they want to take home.

"We wanted to have a try it before you buy it," Gunnerson said. "The best way we could think to put those chiles in action, in a way that's accessible for everybody, is with the classic tortilla, chiles and cheese."

Gunnerson said it's a good way for people to test the different strengths of the fresh roasted chiles. For those with a preference for sweeter things, free pie samples will be available as well.

A mariachi band from Pueblo will also join in the festivities, adding an additional lively touch to the day.

"It's a whole sensory feast," Gunnerson said about the combination of spirited music and various smells wafting throughout the event.

"Nothing beats the smell of freshly roasted chilies on an autumn day. There have been a couple days where it's been cold and rainy and it just warms you from the inside out," Gunnerson said.

There's one more element of fun for Quesadilla day — a birthday. Previous store owner Noble Spencer Jr. is turning 97 this month.

"He's very much retired, but he still likes to watch over all the events," Gunnerson said.

So you can come for the roasted chiles, and stay for the cake.
