Douglas County approved funds for the Town of Parker in what could be a crucial next step to begin widening one of the town’s busiest roads.

County commissioners on Tuesday agreed to contribute $9 million for Lincoln Avenue’s $24 million road reconstruction project.

The project aims to widen Lincoln Avenue from a four-lane section to a six-lane section between Keystone Boulevard and Parker Road, according to Parker town officials.

The Town of Parker is contributing $15 million towards the project.

Road widening along Lincoln Avenue is forecasted to begin in the first half of 2025, depending on the timeline to sign a construction contract, according to Douglas County’s intergovernmental agreement with the Town of Parker.

The town is responsible for all construction of the project. The county is only responsible to pay the $9 million. Right-of-way and easement acquisitions needed for the project have already begun, according to Parker officials.

The intergovernmental agreement said the county and town began considering funding for the project in May 2021. Previously, Douglas County had already contributed $750,000 at the time, promising to contribute at least 33% of project costs, the agreement said.

Parker officials anticipate the project to complete before Dec. 31, 2026, according to its agreement with Douglas County.

How is that going to help the congestion between Chambers and I-25? Why not widening that stretch first? And, why isn't the rollercoaster of bumps from I-25 to Peoria fixed first?
