The Denver Police Department have announced the arrest of a suspect in the shooting of a police officer at Auraria Campus early Monday morning.

A police officer was shot in the arm at the Auraria Campus just after 1 a.m. Monday, university officials said.

Later Monday, Denver police announced they arrested Aaron Verner, 29, on two counts of attempted homicide and assault to a peace officer. The Denver District Attorney’s Office will make a final determination of charges, police officials told The Denver Gazette.

The officer, who was not immediately named, was treated at a nearby hospital and was released, officials said.

Officials said a suspect had assaulted two officers after trespassing into a vehicle and then fled. The officers found the suspect and tried to arrest him the second time, deploying a taser.

At that point, the suspect fired multiple shots, hitting one of the officers in the arm. He again managed to flee on foot, officials said.

Officers form the campus and the Denver Police Department ultimately arrested the suspect.

The university initially shut down the entrance to the Auraria Campus at 9th Street and Colfax Avenue. Additionally, the RTD light rail station at Colfax and Auraria was also closed.

Both the intersection and the light rail station have since reopened.

Officials said campus operations resumed to normal this morning.

This story is developing and will be updated.
