10 athletes to watch at this week's Iowa high school track and field meet

It feels like we were just talking about who would be picking up white flags at the Drake Relays, doesn't it?

Now we're already talking about who will end up with titles at the state track and field meet at Drake's blue oval Thursday through Saturday.

To get you ready for the action, here's a list of 10 top athletes competing at the state track and field meet this week − five boys and five girls.

Stats are from gobound.com as of 11 a.m. on May 13.

    Boys

    Jaden Damiano, Iowa Falls-Alden

Damiano could walk away with four state titles this weekend in Class 2A. He's the state leader in the 110-meter hurdles event and the Class 2A leader in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles and as the first leg of the 4x110-meter hurdles relay.

    Brevin Doll, ADM

He's got a bright future in football ahead of him with the Iowa Hawkeyes, but Doll's got his eye on a couple more state titles before he heads to Iowa City. Doll is the anchor of the state's best 4x100 relay, regardless of class, at 41.48 seconds. He also anchors the state's third-best 4x200 relay. And he's one of the state's fastest in the 100 meters (second in the state, 10.58) and 200 meters (third, 21.43).

    Aidan Jacobsen, Iowa City West

He's one of the nation's best 400-meter hurdle athletes with a 52.03-second time. That time would have been fast enough to qualify for state in the 400-meter dash, without hurdles. That's how quick Jacobsen is.

    Ben Kampman, Solon

Kampman has thrown more than 200 feet this year in discus, 10 feet farther than the next-best discus thrower in the state. After falling short at the Drake Relays, the Duke track commit is looking to bounce back.

    Ethan Zuber, Ankeny

Zuber is one of the premier distance running talents in the state after his state title in cross country last fall. He holds the state's second-fastest 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter times this season, as well as leading one of the nation's fastest 4x800 relay teams as the anchor.

    Girls

    Reese Brownlee, Clear Lake

Brownlee is a favorite to pick up multiple state titles. She is the state's fastest 400-meter hurdler at 1:00.75. She also leads the state in the long jump, jumping just over 19 feet. She also leads Class 3A in the 400-meter dash.

    Anjelena Carder, Waukee

Carder ended the Drake Relays with two white flags and placed second in the 4x400 relay race. She's the state's fastest 400-meter dash runner at 55.45 seconds.

    Addison Dorenkamp, Valley

She's the state's best female distance runner, bar none. She leads the way in the 1,500-meter run by four seconds (4:26.93) and by 19 seconds in the 3,000-meter run (9:23.60). She holds the state record in the 3000 and is second all-time in the 1500, six-tenths of a second from overtaking the record set Shelby Houlihan of Sioux City East in 2011 (4:26.39).

    Ani Wedemeyer, Pleasant Valley

Formerly of Iowa City High, Wedemeyer is dominating with Pleasant Valley. Trailing only Dorenkamp in the mile with a time of 4:30.88, she is the state leader in the 800-meter run at 2:09.31 and is a key leg in Pleasant Valley's 4x400 and 4x800 relays that lead the state entering the weekend.

    Jaidyn Sellers, Panorama

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=39PUYX_0t2tf3J500

After helping Panorama reach the state tournament in hoops, Sellers returned to the track and has thrived. She's the lone 100-meter dash runner to finish under 12 seconds this season, running an 11.92. She ranked inside the top five in the state of the 200-meter dash and in high jump, establishing herself as a contender for a state title in those three events.

She's also entered in the 400-meter dash and is the No. 1-seeded athlete in all four of her events in Class 1A.
