Today's your last chance to see how a straw sculpture gets made at the Iowa State Fair.

Brian Sobaski, a Minnesota-based artist who creates sculptures out of common materials, has his latest work on display at the fair: a straw sculpture called "Landing Rover," located in Ruan Plaza near the Reichardt Family Giant Slide.

The dynamic pieces feature larger-than-life chicken astronauts and their landing equipment as they explore a new landscape. They're wearing unique bright red boots and appear to have laid some giant eggs.

Sobaski's work has appeared at the fair for the past 10 years, though he's unveiling something new this year. The artist set up a selfie park accompanied by several straw sculptures. He'll perform live demonstrations of his work throughout the day Sunday.

"It's just been so positive," Sobaski said of mingling with fair-goers. "It's just amazing."

The selfie sculpture park is stationed behind the giant slide. Sobaski will perform live straw sculpture demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

    Adhering to a young request

Sobaski started making straw sculptures when his young daughter asked if she could have a camel join her for Halloween.

The proud father quickly whipped up a 14-foot-tall straw camel.

"We had it on our front law and it stopped traffic," he said, and soon the word was out in the press.

Sobaski grabbed the idea and ran with it, expanding the spontaneous art form into a full inventory of straw animals and creatures, including those on display at the fair's selfie sculpture park.

He enjoys creating a sense of movement in his sculptures while being able to work outdoors and be closer to the land.

Sobaski's daughter is grown and still requests straw sculptures for the front lawn.
