New parents, if in a few years, your child is enrolled in kindergarten with several Charlottes and Olivers in the same class, that’s because both were the most popular baby names in Iowa for 2023.

The Social Security Administration tracks the most popular names given to babies in each state through social security card application data. People can search back as far back as 1960 to see 100 of the most frequently given names to both male and female babies through the administration's website or via the Des Moines Register's database of Iowa's most popular baby names.

Last year in Iowa, 195 male babies were named Oliver, and 162 female babies were named Charlotte, according to the Social Security Administration.

Across the nation, Liam and Olivia were the most popular names for males and females born last year. Both names rank high in Iowa’s list of most popular baby names for 2023.

What are the most popular baby names in Iowa?

Here are the top nine baby names for males born in Iowa in 2023, following Oliver in the No. 1 spot. Following each name is the number of times a child was given the name, according to the Social Security Administration’s data.

    • Henry, 174
    • Theodore, 158
    • Liam, 146
    • Noah, 138
    • Jack, 137
    • Hudson, 118
    • William, 111
    • James, 107
    • Owen, 105

Here are the top nine baby names for females following Charlotte:

    • Olivia, 130
    • Amelia, 127
    • Harper, 124
    • Evelyn, 123
    • Emma, 116
    • Sophia, 111
    • Eleanor, 108
    • Ava, 104
    • Hazel, 92

The Social Security Administration’s 100 most popular baby names in Iowa overlaps with what maternity departments across the Des Moines metro found earlier this year for popular baby names . For example, UnityPoint Health Des Moines hospitals found Charlotte, Eleanor, Amelia, Henry, Jack and Oliver as some of the most popular female and male names for babies in 2023.
