Des Moines police investigate Wednesday morning crash that left six hospitalized

Des Moines police are investigating a crash that left six people hospitalized on Wednesday morning.

Des Moines police officers and firefighters were dispatched to the 7000 block of Bloomfield Road to investigate a report of a crash involving multiple people at around 7:30 a.m., the police department said in a news release.

First responders found that two cars were involved in the crash and at least one person had been ejected from their vehicle, the news release said. Others involved in the crash had to be extracted mechanically.

Six people were transported to local hospitals, the news release said. Four people remain hospitalized, ranging from critical to serious condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

A preliminary investigation, including witness statements, found a 2016 Dodge Charger was traveling southeast on Bloomfield Road at a high-rate of speed when it crashed into a 2009 Toyota Camry which was entering the roadway from a private driveway on the south side of the road.

Investigators are saying excessive speed, failure to yield and driver impairment are potential contributing factors to the crash.

The crash is still under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.
