Woodward-Granger’s Fuson climbs up state football ranks, volleyball takes down I-35

It’s homecoming week for Woodward-Granger and it presents a nice challenge for the Hawks to push through to the momentum growing this season. (Events covered: Sept. 24-30)

    Football (4-1)

There’s a new leader in the state.

After finding all six of the offense’s touchdowns on Friday in Ogden (1-4), no quarterback in Class 1A has scored more than Talan Fuson this year. Dotting up his receivers for three touchdowns and making use of his legs for three more (on top of a season-high 164 rushing yards), Fuson now sits with 16 scores on the year.

With great versatility, Fuson was equally effective on the ground and through the air. On a team-high 15 carries, he averaged 11 yards per touch. Through the air, he continued to let it rip, dotting up Kane Mahler-Moreno on an 89-yard touchdown (one of two TDs) to help surge to 125 yards.

The team’s second-longest touchdown of the season also came Friday, as CJ Petersen scooped up a fumble and took it 76 yards to the house.

After the win, the Hawks have prime position in the race for the district title, as Woodward hosts Grand View (4-1) on Friday. Last year’s meeting resulted in a 56-14 win for the Hawks, completely shutting down their pass-heavy attack.

While the Thunder is 1-1 in district competition (losing to Ogden), they’re tied with W-G at the top of the overall standings with a 4-1 record. A win on Friday would position the Hawks into the top of the district at 3-0 in District 7. That would make the season finale with South Hamilton a possible de facto title game, as the Hawks are currently 2-0 in the district as well.

    Volleyball (6-13)

In a Pink Out for cancer fundraising on Sept. 24, the Hawks earned one of the their biggest wins of the season.

At arms length all night, the Hawks won 3-0 against Interstate 35 (4-14) by 16, 17 and 14 points. The season is starting to wind down, with just two more regular season matchups remaining until the WCAC meet on Oct. 14 and closed by the Hawks’ home tournament on Oct. 19.

    Cross Country

The Hawks’ boys crew was a heated race in the middle of the pack at Sept. 26 meet, finishing in fifth place out of eight teams on ACGC’s grounds.

Ahead of Woodward by just three points was Martensdale-St. Marys while Perry sat behind by just one point.

Helping with the biggest boost of the day, Cooper Finestead rocked an 18th place time of 19 minutes 54 seconds. Looking to get under 20 minutes this season, Jackson Bowlsby rocked a time of 20:07 for 20th place.

W-G’s girls ticket was bogged down by the absence of Eva Fleshner, leaving Lilyen Churchill (26:30) and Adysen Churchill (28:23) at the top with 29th and 40th place, respectively.
