Hy-Vee stores hosting free grillouts after being named best grocery store by shoppers

Hy-Vee, the Iowa-based grocery store chain, is celebrating its customers with free food on Saturday.

While supplies last, the grocery store will hand out a free hot dog or burger, chips and water from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at all of its locations.

The store is calling it the event a customer appreciation grill out. It’s in celebration of being named the No. 1 grocery store in America by its shoppers .

Hy-Vee was voted the best grocery store in the country in USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards , beating out Aldi and Trader Joe's. Hy-Vee moved up a spot in the rankings after finishing second in 2023 .

The first Hy-Vee opened in Beaconsfield, Iowa in 1930. Now it has more than 570 stores across nine Midwestern states with sales of more than $13 billion each year, according to the company .
