Abortion access should pale to more pressing concerns
Abortions are still available to Iowans. Gov. Tim Walz made it very clear that if you are in the need for an abortion, for any reason, the great state of Minnesota will welcome you!
You can drive up and have the procedure done, drive back home and possibly make it home for dinner.
What makes me wonder: Why is abortion the No. 1 issue for the liberal crowd? More important than cost of food, inflation, pending conflicts abroad, and a secure border.
You all have a choice, but to make this such a sounding board to the American people is astonishing to me.

The real socialism?
Should the use of eminent domain for private business be considered a form of socialism?

Tariffs on Mexico would be disastrous
Donald Trump has been threatening a 100% tariff on cars and farm machinery imported from Mexico. This week he raised the ante to 200%. Economists pretty much agree that tariffs are ultimately paid by the consumer of the product. Also, if you are a farmer, it might be wise to realize that Mexico is by far the leading importer of our crops. Certainly retaliation would occur.

House farm bill is not bipartisan
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, along with the Iowa congressional delegation, keeps stressing the need for a new farm bill. We do need that.
But they often refer to the current U.S. House effort as being a “bipartisan bill.” That’s just the old political smoke and mirrors. In reality, four Democrats voted for the bill simply to get rid of it and out of committee. Everyone in the room knew the bill contained so many right-wing poison pills that it stood no chance of ever becoming law. It’s a simple fact. There is a coalition of extreme-right Republicans that will stop any sensible bill from passing. Some of them want to end farm subsidies altogether. A new farm bill that is fair and effective for all concerned will not be passed until Democrats control the House. Farmers everywhere should keep that in mind when they vote in November.

History had ‘one really violent day’ before
Donald Trump has proclaimed that he’ll be a “dictator for one day” if he is re-elected. He also stated recently that he will end property crime in “one really violent day.” Historically, there is a name when a dictator caused one really violent day. It’s called Kristallnacht.

Iowa needs some heroes to try more pork tenderloins
Whoa! Hold on! The Iowa Pork Producers Association received 532 nominations for this year’s best breaded pork tenderloin and judged only 40?! Come on people, that’s less than 10%. We’re better than that, Iowa. Did our ancestors move here for less than 10%? Next year I say we rally together and volunteer for 100%! Sounds like a challenge that I am willing to accept. Any takers?

J.D. Vance should try kindness more often
It was a thoughtful gesture during the debate when J.D. Vance invoked Christ’s mercy after hearing about Tim Walz’s son being traumatized by gun violence.
We know Vance can show kindness, so where’s the mercy in regard to the legal Haitian refugees whom he accused of eating people’s pets? Where’s the mercy for women who choose not to have children who Vance called “childless cat ladies?” Where is the mercy for the officers injured during the Jan. 6 riot and their families? God’s mercy should be extended to all who are victims of hate.
