Dogpatch Urban Farm, the only for-profit farm in Des Moines, plans to close its operations after seven years in business. Owner Jenny Quiner, who opened the urban farm in 2017, told her newsletter subscribers that she plans to close the farm after Flannel Fest on Sept. 29 with stands from local vendors.

“I write this letter with bittersweet emotions, but I want to inform all our loyal customers that we are closing the doors to Dogpatch Urban Gardens. This is not an easy decision to make, but in all honestly, it feels right,” she wrote in the newsletter.

Quiner plans to “devote more time to my family, rest my mind and body, and devote time to my husband’s (Eric’s) growing business.”

Quiner was named a Person to Watch by the Des Moines Register in 2018. Her farm, a regular at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market, specializes in “growing annual vegetable crops and flowers focusing on salad-oriented products.”

Last year, Quiner opened a garden center on 1.25 acres with two greenhouses filled with plants, supplies, seeds, soil, fertilizer, and tools. The farm holds a “FarmStand to Fork Dinner” on Sept. 22, followed by Flannel Fest on Sept. 29 to wrap up the business.

Quiner said she already started selling her farm equipment, greenhouses, and property , which includes an AirBnB, a farmhouse, and the farm stand that includes a certified raw commercial kitchen.
