Blaze in San Bernardino National Forest south of Banning burns 33 acres, now 95% contained

A brush fire along Highway 243 in the San Bernardino National Forest south of Banning was holding at 33 acres Friday, and was just about fully contained.

The non-injury Edna Fire was reported at 3:40 p.m. Thursday in the area of Highway 243 and Mount Edna Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency stated that multiple engine crews were sent to the location, along with two Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters, encountering flames moving at a moderate rate on the southbound side of the two-lane mountain corridor.

Banning police officers shut down traffic lanes going out of the city and into the federal preserve for public safety. However, the closure was lifted overnight.

No homes or other structures were threatened.

Its forward rate of spread was stopped at 6 p.m. Thursday, and as of 10 a.m. Friday, the fire was 95% contained, according to officials.

No Cal Fire aircraft were overhead the blaze Friday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
