    Four people were killed and nine people were injured at a Georgia high school after a 14-year-old boy, identified as Colt Gray, opened fire on Wednesday.

    This marks the 23 rd school shooting in America in 2024, according to Education Week — and the shootings in 2024 include Skyline High School in Oakland in May and Grant Union High School in Sacramento in January.

    What happened in Winder, Georgia?

    Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, went under lockdown on the morning of Sept. 4 when Gray opened fire in his high school, USA TODAY reported .

    Teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie died, as well as 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Eight other students and one teacher were injured, according to USA TODAY .

    Winder is the county seat of Barrow County and is located northeast of Atlanta. It’s about a 50-mile drive from Georgia's capitol, depending on the route taken, according to Google Maps .

    How many mass shootings have occurred in California in 2024?

    There have been 26 mass shootings in California, with the last one recorded on Aug. 29, according to the Gun Violence Archive definition. The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as when four or more people are shot or killed, not including the shooter.

    These are the mass shootings GVA has recorded so far this year:

    • Jan. 1: Two people were killed, and eight others were injured in a shooting in Los Angeles.
    • Jan. 6: A 17-year-old was charged with killing four family members in Reedley, the Fresno Bee reported .
    • Jan. 11: Five people were injured in a shooting in Compton.
    • Jan. 18: One man was killed, and four others were injured in a shooting in San Francisco.
    • Jan. 23: Six people were killed in a shooting in an unincorporated area of Adelanto. Five men were arrested .
    • Jan. 28: Four people were injured in a shooting in Compton.
    • Feb. 11: Four people were killed, including a 14-year-old, and a 13-year-old was injured in a shooting in Huntington Park that involved three suspects, including one minor.
    • Feb. 18: Four minors were injured in a shooting in Carson.
    • Feb. 19: Five people were injured in Oakland in a shooting that involved two adults and two minors as suspects.
    • March 3: Four people were killed, and seven others were injured in a shooting during a birthday party in King City. Police arrested three suspects, including a minor, in May, KPIX, a CBS News affiliate, reported .
    • March 16: Four people were injured in a shooting in Manteca.
    • May 4: Seven people were injured in a shooting outside a Long Beach nightclub by at least two gunmen in a “gang-related attack,” the Long Beach Post reported.
    • May 25: Five people were injured in a shooting in San Fernando that involved a suspect who was believed to have shot at the Los Angeles Police Department helicopter, according to a news release .
    • May 27: Five people were injured, including a teenager and one of three suspects, in a shooting in Sacramento.
    • June 7: One man was killed, and five others were injured in a shooting in Compton.
    • June 18: Two people died, and two others were injured in a shooting in Richmond.
    • June 19: Fourteen people, including one suspect charged with shooting four of them, were injured in Oakland during a Juneteenth celebration, the Associated Press reported .
    • June 23: One man was killed, and three other people were injured in a shooting in Vallejo.
    • June 26: Two men were killed, and five people were injured in Lancaster in a shooting that involved two adult suspects in what was described as “gang-related,” according to Fox LA .
    • July 10: Five people, including a 1-year-old child, were killed in Alameda in a “domestic shooting,” according to ABC affiliate KGO .
    • July 18: Four people were injured in a shooting in Los Angeles that involved three suspects.
    • July 20: One man was killed, and three others were injured, including two minors, in a shooting in Vista.
    • July 28: Four people, including a 14-year-old boy, were injured in a shooting in Los Angeles.
    • Aug. 4: Five people were injured in a shooting in Oakland.
    • Aug. 17: Two people were killed, and two others were injured in Oakland during a “verbal altercation,” according to KPIX . Two people were arrested in connection to the shooting, according to Fox affiliate KTUV .
    • Aug. 29: Four people were injured in a shooting in Tulare.

    How many school shootings have occurred in the US in 2024?

    As of Thursday, Sept. 5 morning, 23 school shootings, including the shooting at Apalachee High School, have killed or injured 49 people in 2024 , according to data compiled by Education Week .

    Education Week only tracks incidents that meet the following criteria:

    • Reported incidents where a firearm was discharged
    • Where any individual, other than the suspect or perpetrator, has a bullet wound resulting from the incident
    • Occurred on K-12 school property or on a school bus
    • Occurred while school is in session or during a school-sponsored event

    Last year, 63 people were either injured or killed in 38 school shootings, and a total of 488 people were either killed or injured in a school shooting in the last six years.
