62-year-old man killed in crash on Highway 86 in Coachella

Authorities have identified a 62-year-old man who died when his vehicle collided with another on Highway 86 in Coachella.

The crash occurred about ¾ of a mile south of where Highway 86 crosses over Avenue 52 and was reported shortly before 2 p.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The victim, Juan Castro of Thermal, had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported to a hospital in Indio, where he was pronounced dead a little less than an hour after the crash.

The coroner reported that Castro's injuries occurred on the northbound side of the highway, but the sheriff's department did not provide additional details about the crash, which it said is under investigation.

The driver of the other vehicle was also brought to a hospital with what were described as minor injuries.
