The Detroit Free Press wants to recognize the city's leaders of tomorrow — today.

To that end, we're seeking nominations Student of the Week feature to recognize metro Detroit high schoolers for their amazing achievements both within and beyond the classroom walls. These are students who deserve recognition for their academic excellence or outstanding school or community service.

This week we have two students up for the honor.

    • Kyla Stephens, a senior at Detroit Central High School. Her nominator describes Kyla as "a quiet giant" in the school's inaugural AP Biology class who, "while super intelligent … is not pretentious, and, while not being shy to share her perception when asked, she's kind-hearted and willing to help others if an opportunity arises. "
    • Joshua T. Sloan, a senior at Bloomfield Hills High School. Joshua's nominator says he "exemplifies the qualities of a scholar, leader, and servant of others, making him a truly newsworthy individual." Joshua currently has 4.2 grade point average and is a member of the National Honor Society.
