    Hello, listeners:

We've been talking about the " Where Secrets Go to Die " podcast for a long time now, and it turns out so have locals in the Upper Peninsula where the story took place.

People in and around the Newberry area say they've been discussing the story in their workplaces, at the beauty shop and over coffee after church.

I talked to several of them who had heard bits and pieces of the Derrick Henagan case over the years. They were intrigued to learn more details and hear names and places they recognized. Some of them were shocked by the accusations made against Michigan State Police.

One man who reached out to me grew up in the area before moving to Kalamazoo during COVID. He offered an especially interesting take.

Allan Macaulay spent about 10 years working for the Luce County Road Commission, which owns the property that was searched with a cadaver dog in Episode 1 . He also knew Trooper David Moeggenborg. The two would sometimes meet for coffee when both of them were working the midnight shifts on their respective jobs, he said.

Macaulay said he was familiar with that road commission property because he ran a bulldozer on it about a year or so after Henagan went missing. He said he didn't see anything suspicious. He offered another possible explanation for the mounds of earth in the woods that Meghan Moeggenborg described seeing. To her eyes, they appeared to be graves.

You can read his take and that of other locals in this story on Freep.com.

All eight episodes in the series are available on Freep.com , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts.
