Rite Aid will close all Michigan stores by the end of September, transferring customer prescriptions to Walgreens, a Rite Aid spokesperson confirmed to the Free Press in a Wednesday email.

While the timeframe for shuttering the stores is new information, the store closings are not a suprise.

In June, the Free Press, citing Rite Aid employees, reported the plan to close all stores and transfer prescriptions to Walgreens. Rite Aid confirmed Wednesday that it is closing all of its 186 stores in Michigan.

Since filing for bankruptcy in October 2023, Rite Aid has been closing stores across the country and in Michigan

Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the wake of declining sales, mounting debt and lawsuits accusing it ― and other pharmacies ― of illegally filling prescriptions that have contributed to a nationwide opioid epidemic.

Stores across the state have slapped going out of business signs in their windows.
