The Detroit Tigers are calling up one of the two prospects acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Jack Flaherty trade .

Infielder Trey Sweeney , who joined the Tigers at the July 30 trade deadline, has been promoted from Triple-A Toledo for his MLB debut, according to a source not at liberty to discuss roster moves publicly. The 24-year-old is arriving in Detroit on Thursday night and will be available to play in Friday's game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.

Sweeney, a left-handed hitter, registered a .381 batting average with two home runs, five walks and 12 strikeouts in 11 games for the Mud Hens after the trade. He performs best against right-handed pitchers, struggling against lefties.

"I think he's still sort of settling into Triple-A right now, so that's where he's going to go with us," Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said July 30 after the trade deadline, just 16 days before calling up Sweeney. "I think he's going to need a few more reps in Triple-A before he can impact us up here. But in terms of the athlete, the swing, the ability to play a premium position as a left-handed hitter, those are hard to find, and we're fortunate that we found one in Trey."

The Tigers need to open a spot on the 26-man roster and the 40-man roster for Sweeney.

In 2024, Sweeney is hitting .267 with 15 home runs, 49 walks (10.1% walk rate) and 130 strikeouts (26.7% strikeout rate) across 107 games in Triple-A Oklahoma City (96 games) and Triple-A Toledo (11 games). He hit .255 with a .761 OPS before the trade to the Tigers.

Sweeney plays shortstop and third base, and although he has plenty of experience at shortstop, he could end up as a utility player who specializes in third base and second base.

Before the Tigers, Sweeney was selected by the Yankees with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2021 draft out of Eastern Illinois. He was then traded from the Yankees to the Dodgers in December 2023, with the Yankees getting left-handed reliever Victor González and second baseman Jorbit Vivas in return.

Sweeney is the Tigers' No. 20 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline .
