Handcuffed teen spurs flurry of responses

The mother of a teenage girl who was recently handcuffed and threatened with jail by a Detroit judge frustrated with her sleeping in court explained that her daughter was likely tired because the family currently does not have a permanent place to stay .

The judge, Kenneth King, said he detained the teen to "serve as a deterrence," is now receiving death threats for his decision.

It's a situation antithetical to "the people's court" atmosphere that one of Detroit's busiest courts aims to provide," said Chief Judge William McConico. He also announced King's temporary removal from the docket and required training.
