The first public offering of a 15,000-square-foot pink-colored home, built by renowned mid-century modern architect Ald en B. Dow for his sister Dorothy Arbury, has hit the market this month for $2.4 million.

“It’s built on a bluff overlooking the Chippewa River,” said listing agent Thomas Webb of Century 21 Signature Realty in Saginaw. “The home offers natural views throughout, providing a serene and picturesque setting.”

Located at 745 S. Meridian in Homer Township, in Midland County, Michigan, this unique home was constructed using Dow’s patented unit block building system. The property covers more than 89 acres, providing significant privacy with a 1-mile private, gated, and paved driveway off the main road.

The estate features frontage on the Chippewa River and is surrounded by more than 500 acres of conservation land, originally part of the estate.  Built in 1939, the home includes five bedrooms, four full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, and a six-car garage.

The house features a pinwheel design centered around the main entrance that branches into four spacious wings. One wing houses four bedrooms, while the opposite wing includes the kitchen, dining room and screened porch. The dining room is particularly notable for its elegant tall mirrored walls and ceiling grid of 36 square mirrors, each corner illuminated by small lights.

The third wing is dedicated to a 24-foot by 24-foot living room, split into two levels. The lower level features built-in seating around a fireplace, while the upper level is filled with natural light from windows on two sides.

An 80-foot covered walkway leads to the fourth wing, which contains a three-car garage. The home’s lower level includes a 29-foot by 52-foot game room, where plain white unit block walls are contrasted by vibrant colors and playful shapes adorning the walls, ceiling, and linoleum floor.

According to Webb, the home boasts interesting features, including geometrically designed ceilings, built-in storage throughout, and a unique maintenance tunnel that connects the home to the garage and barn. The property also includes multiple barns, one of which is a large maintenance barn.

“I’m looking for a buyer who appreciates mid-century modern architecture, desires a substantial estate-sized property, and values the privacy and natural setting this estate offers,” Webb said.

Alden B. Dow, a Midland native, was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright , with whom he studied. Dow’s innovative design and attention to detail are also reflected in his own residence, which he designed the same year as this home.
