NBC's Cris Collinsworth 'impressed' by new Detroit Lions cornerbacks

If you ask NBC's Sunday Night Football commentator Cris Collinsworth, the Detroit Lions look like they may have patched the biggest hole they had last year.

It was no secret the Lions needed to fix their secondary after ranking near the bottom of the NFL in passing defense for multiple years in a row.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes decided to address the issue head on by trading for cornerback Carlton Davis III from the Tampa Buccaneers, signing slot corner Amik Robertson in free agency and then drafting corners Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the first and second rounds.

It's still early, but the early returns have been super positive, Collinsworth said on the broadcast.

"Well the one thing I'll say so far that has impressed me has been these new cornerbacks for the Detroit Lions, have done a pretty good job," Collinsworth said. "That was always kind of the Achilles heel out there for that team, and if they get that part right, you're seeing Aaron Glenn, their defensive coordinator, much more confident calling man-to-man defenses now.

"If you're a Lions fan that is significant."

Collinsworth continued to praise some plays made by defensive back Brian Branch and Davis, and just a few minutes after his short monologue, the Lions made him look prophetic.

The Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford were driving down the field with a chance to tie the game before halftime when safety Kerby Joseph, who led the Lions last year with four picks, came up with a huge interception to take potential points off the board.

It's still very early, but so far so good for the new-look Lions secondary.
