'I Think You Should Leave' and 'Detroiters' star Tim Robinson lands new HBO series

HBO just told Tim Robinson that it thinks he should stick around.

The pay-cable network announced Thursday that it has ordered the half hour comedy series "The Chair Company," which will star and be written and executive produced by Robinson, of Netflix's "I Think You Should Leave."

In his hometown region, Robinson is best-loved for the Comedy Central classic "Detroiters."

Robinson will share writing and executive producing duties with Zach Kanin, his collaborator on "Detroiters" and "I Think You Should Leave" and former "Saturday Night Live" writing colleague.

HBO describes the series as involving a man name William Ronald Trosper (played by Robinson) who, "after an embarrassing incident at work ... finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy."

The cast will include Lake Bell (“Harley Quinn"), Sophia Lillis ("It"), Will Price (“After the Hunt") and Joseph Tudisco ("FBI”) as Mike Santini.

Lou Diamond Phillips guest starred in the pilot.

In a news statement, HBO & Max comedy programming executive vice president Amy Gravitt said, "With an imprint only Tim and Zach can have on a character, William Ronald Trosper follows in the strong tradition of HBO comedy leads. I couldn’t be happier to announce the pickup of this wildly enjoyable show.”

Robinson, who hails from Clarkston, and his best friend Sam Richardson, who grew up in Detroit, had a breakthrough critical success in 2017 with "Detroiters," a sitcom made in Detroit and laden with Motor City details. It was canceled by Comedy Central after two seasons despite acquiring a dedicated fan following that includes NBC "Late Night" host Seth Meyers and Questlove, the multi-talented drummer for the Roots, the house band for NBC's "Tonight Show."

Robinson is a three-time Emmy winner. In January, he earned his second Emmy for best actor in a short form comedy or drama for his sketch show, "I Think You Should Leave." He also took home his first Emmy this year as an executive producer when "I Think You Should Leave" won for best short form comedy, drama or variety series.

Robinson and Kanin brought their "I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson Live!" tour to Detroit's Fox Theatre in April.
