I'm a suburban Detroit Lions fan, and I pick my trash up when I tailgate

Detroit and Detroit fans deserve respect

I applaud the writer for stating what should have been said many years ago. (" Welcome to Detroit, Lions fans — take your trash when you go ," Detroit Free Press, Sept. 6.)

The fans give the team and city a bad name. As a former Detroiter who still calls Detroit home, I agree with what was said. Yes, the city was down. Heck, the state was down, but that does not give one the right to trash the city after a game.

Is there some type of enforced littering laws, or anyone who can make those fans pick up behind themselves? I would love to see the Lions win the Super Bowl, but I know how these fans would act, and how it would give the city a bad rap. Take your trash and bad attitude with you to your suburban area. Those who have always loved Detroit will stand up for goodness and goodwill. We the real Detroit fans demand better, and respect.

In Ann Arbor, I put a trash can on the sidewalk

Regarding Randy Essex's column about litter after sports games, I couldn't agree more.

I love Detroit. However, here's a tip I learned from living in Ann Arbor for many years. On game days, I moved our trash can out to the sidewalk and taped a sign to it: "Welcome to Ann Arbor! Please put your trash here." Before long, several on my block were doing the same. And it worked! The can was never empty at the end of a game day, but our block was clear of trash.

I realize this isn't an option for everyone, but if it is ... think of it as a very low effort, "Welcome to our city, help us keep it nice" gesture that hopefully is reciprocated by people putting their trash in the can.

We're from the suburbs, and we pick our trash up

Myself and my family are Detroit Lions season ticket holders. We tailgate before most home games. I can not believe that somebody would disrespect the city like this. Please do not judge all of us by one bad seed. I love Detroit — the city, the sports, and at times we are jealous that we do not live downtown in the middle of the action. If Detroit Lions fans want to be respected around the country as a winning team, we need to respect our own city.
