WHAT A TIME: Is this heaven? No, baby, it's the Motor City with the soaring Lions and surprising Tigers

Game notes: The Tigers continue their important series against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday evening, a night after carrying a perfect game into the eighth inning and losing a combined no-hitter with two outs in the ninth, then holding on for the 1-0 win .

A Minnesota Twins 8-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds brought the Tigers within 2½ games of the final American League wild-card spot . The Twins host the Reds again Saturday night.

The Tigers have 14 games left in the regular season , with five against the Orioles, one of the tougher teams in the AL . Baltimore is atop the wild-card standings, but its offensive funk has caused it to drop three games back of the New York Yankees in the AL East .

The Tigers did not name a starting pitcher for Saturday and will likely be rolling with an opener for the second straight day after using the strategy on Friday as well. While it may not be a long-term fix, manager A.J. Hinch has used openers with a lot of success in 2024 and it has even helped the Tigers get back into the AL wild-card race amidst a litany of injuries.

The Orioles, meanwhile, will certainly not be messing around with any openers, as American League All-Star game starting pitcher Corbin Burnes – who beat out Cy Young leader Tarik Skubal to get the nod – will be on the mound at Comerica Park. Burnes is putting together yet another great season in his first year in Baltimore and will present quite a few challenges for the young Tigers lineup that has found success in the latter part of the season.

After the Tigers and Orioles play the second game of their series on Saturday, they finish Sunday afternoon – while the Lions host the Tampa Bay Bucs – before the Tigers travel to Kansas City for yet another tough series.
