The Detroit Lions starting middle linebacker Alex Anzalone was placed in concussion protocol in the second half of the game Sunday against the Tampa Bay Bucs at Ford Field .

Anzalone was ruled out after being evaluated for a concussion, the team announced late in the fourth quarter.

He got hit in the head by fellow linebacker Derrick Barnes while pursuing Baker Mayfield on the quarterback's 11-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left in the third quarter. Anzalone walked off and no trainers came onto the field.

The score gave the Bucs a 20-16 lead, which was the final score .

Third-year linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez filled Anzalone's spot in base defense, and veteran special-teams ace Jalen Reeves-Maybin also saw some snaps.
