Detroit Red Wings re-sign Jonatan Berggren just days ahead of training camp

Update: Lucas Raymond's deal was announced around 7 p.m. Monday.

That's one done: The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed Jonatan Berggren .

A skilled forward, Berggren was a restricted free agent, and received a deal for $825,000, the team announced Monday . His previous contract, an entry-level one, had an annual cap hit of $925,000.

That still leaves restricted free agents Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond without new deals, with training camp just days away.

Berggren, 24, has been in the Wings system since they drafted him at No. 33 in 2018. The native of Uppsala, Sweden, began his North American career in 2021-22, delivering an impressive rookie campaign in the American Hockey League with 21 goals and 43 assists in 70 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The following season he made inroads towards his NHL career, appearing in 67 games with the Wings and producing 15 goals among 28 points in 67 games.

A matter of trust: What Jonatan Berggren must do to finally be a regular with Red Wings

While Berggren proved he could score in the NHL, his lack of assertiveness in his own zone, coupled with a roster crunch last fall, led to his spending most of 2023-24 in the minors.

Berggren (5 feet 11, 197 pounds) posted 24 goals and 56 points in 53 games last season with the Griffins. He appeared in 12 games for the Wings, with two goals and four assists.

Berggren is no longer exempt from the waiver wire, so he projects to be among the 12 forwards on the roster when the 2024-25 regular season begins at home Oct. 10 vs. Pittsburgh .
