Eastern Market has canceled its next home game tailgate for the Detroit Lions following a shooting that killed two people last weekend .

The Sept. 30 tailgate for the Monday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks was canceled out of respect for the victims and their families, Eastern Market leadership announced in a post on social media Tuesday afternoon. The time will be used to put safeguards in place, according to the announcement, and the market is seeking to make the area a “weapon free zone” going forward.

Jalen Welch, 25, and Rayshawn Bryant, 40, both of Detroit, were fatally shot at the popular Lions tailgate spot Sunday.

Police said an argument escalated in the market’s open-air Shed 6 after the Lions hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Eastern Market Corp. has said the shooting occurred "after the conclusion of the Lions game and following our tailgating event.”

Police have not provided additional details on the circumstances of the shooting, but Bryant's family said their loved one was trying to break up a fight between two men when he was shot.

Police arrested an Oak Park man in his 30s who is licensed to carry a gun, but no charges have been announced.

The Eastern Market Corp. said, in a prior statement to the Free Press, that the market has long felt safe for visitors and hosts thousands of people each Saturday, along with cultural events, “in what remains a safe and welcoming environment.”

“This was the first incident of gun violence at the market in our 133-year history. … We send our condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the incident, as well as everyone who was impacted by the event,” the statement read.

Tailgates are expected to resume after Sept. 30. The Lions' next home game is Oct. 27 against the Tennessee Titans. Additional security measures are expected to be made public ahead of time.

The unfortunate thing is that there are too many elements to prevent someone from bringing weapons to any public place. The police presence was already in place, and it still occurred. The culprit was a CCW holder, and he misused the process. We can only appeal to the consciousness of people in hopes that they will reciprocate. My Opinion.
