    Detroit Free Press Prep Athlete of the Week for Sept. 16-22: Paw Paw High's Ben Miller

    NOMINATE AN ATHLETE FROM ANY FALL SPORT FOR NEXT WEEK'S CONTEST

    It's time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Prep Athlete of the Week.

    Readers sent in several nominees and the Free Press made its own picks, too. There are six football players in this week's poll. Readers can vote once per hour. Scroll down to the bottom of this story for the ballot.

    Voting will be open until 11:59 a.m. Thursday. We'll announce the winner shortly after the poll closes.

    Here are this week's nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):

    Ryan Counts, Birmingham Groves High School : The senior quarterback had a stellar passing game in a 35-7 victory over Rochester High School. Counts went 13-for-14 in passing and threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 13 yards on three carries.

    Cooper Derkach, Northville High School : In a 54-0 victory over Canton, Derkach had a standout performance in his first career start for the Mustangs. The junior quarterback went 11-for-15 and had 251 passing yards. He tied the school’s passing touchdown record with five passing touchdowns. Derkach also rushed for 84 yards on four carries and one touchdown.

    Gary Humphries Jr., Detroit Cody High School : The junior running back had 17 carries and rushed for 302 yards on offense in a 42-6 win over Northwestern High School. On the defensive side of the ball, Humphries Jr. plays defensive back for the Comets and had eight tackles for the night.

    Elliot Larner, DeWitt High School : The senior quarterback broke the school’s single-game-rushing record in a 70-63 victory against a team that made the trip from Hurricane High School in Hurricane, West Virginia. Laner rushed for 279 yards on 22 carries and tied the schools single game rushing touchdown record with five touchdowns. He also went 10-for-15 in passing and threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

    Ben Miller, Paw Paw High School : The junior running back helped lead the Red Wolves to a 34-7 victory over Vicksburg over the weekend. Miller had 11 carries and ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

    Joseph Tate, Detroit East English Preparatory Academy: The senior quarterback was a bigtime contributor for the Bulldogs in their 58-32 victory over Southeastern High School. Tate rushed for 255 yards on eight carries and had four rushing-touchdowns along with completing 5-of-7 in passing for 121 yards and had two passing touchdowns. On defensive, where Tate plays defensive back, he recorded six tackles and one interception.
