The customer appreciation event comes as Kroger Co.’s proposed nearly $25 billion merger with Albertsons is under scrutiny by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Kroger and Albertsons maintain the proposed merger is necessary to be competitive and that a merger would mean lower prices for consumers.

But the commission in February filed suit to block the proposed merger alleging it would reduce competition, raise grocery and other household item prices for millions of Americans and would hurt workers. High inflation has impacted grocery prices with consumers seeing a 25% increase from 2019 to 2023, according to government data. Consumers paying higher grocery prices also is at the forefront of this year’s political campaigns.

Attorneys General in eight states joined the FTC’s lawsuit. The first trial took place in Oregon and is now in the hands of a Portland judge. A Kroger executive during the Oregon trial admitted the grocer raised prices more than needed on essentials like eggs and milk above the inflation rate, according to Bloomberg .
