INSIDE THE TIGERS: Comerica Park seemed to shake off cobwebs, come alive

Game notes: Can the Detroit Tigers finish their penultimate series on a strong note?

The Tigers kicked things off with the Rays on Tuesday with a narrow 2-1 victory that came with the help of another gem from ace Tarik Skubal. On Thursday, the Tigers will be hoping for another gem from a starter they hope can one day turn into a player of Skubal's caliber.

Early this year, Reese Olson was one of the best pitchers in baseball, despite a porous record. After his start on May 25, his 10th of the season, Olson had a 1.92 ERA but somehow a 1-5 record thanks to some poor run support. Over his next three starts at the beginning of June, Olson allowed five runs, eight runs and then five runs again while surrendering 28 hits over the three-game span. That brought his ERA to a season-high 3.68, a number he quickly brought back down with three straight quality starts.

Olson made just three starts in July before he was placed on the injured list with a shoulder injury and didn't pitch again for the Tigers until Sept. 16 as the team was in the midst of a playoff push. In his two outings since coming back to the Tigers, he's pitched 2⅓ and three innings. He gave up a costly grand slam against Bobby Witt Jr. and the Royals in his first outing that resulted in all four of his earned runs, but looked sharp in his second time out after the injury, giving up one hit and one run over three innings while striking out three batters.

BREAAATHE: Detroit Tigers continue to prove they're made for the playoffs, even if it's never easy

Olson will be tossed into another high-leverage situation on Thursday, as he's scheduled to start the series finale against the Rays before the Tigers begin a new series with the worst team in modern baseball history, the Chicago White Sox.

The Tigers will likely have to rely heavily on their bullpen again as Olson continues to build his pitch count back up. Prior to the injury in July, Olson was usually pulled when he had right around 100 pitches, a number he hit twice, but since returning, he's thrown 50 and 58 pitches. Expect the pitch count to be right around that number again on Thursday unless there's something unexpected.

Former Tiger Tyler Alexander starts for the Rays.
