National Coffee Day is Sunday: Where to find free offers, discounts

While millions of Americans drink coffee every day, Sunday is an extra special day for celebrating a cup of joe.

Every Sept. 29 is deemed National Coffee Day in United States. The beloved brew is also celebrated globally on Oct. 1 for International Coffee Day. To mark National Coffee Day and help coffee lovers celebrate, coffee shops, fast-food establishments, convenience stores and other places known for coffee are perking up with freebies, discounts or deals.

It's no secret that coffee is a popular drink. According to the National Coffee Association, American adults consume more than 400 million cups of coffee per day.

Americans who consume coffee drink on average 2.5 cups of coffee per day, according to the National Coffee Association's 2024 trends report.

Other key findings by the National Coffee Association:

• While 61% of Americans choose traditional coffee, 56% turn to specialty coffees like lattes, espressos and cappuccinos.
• 24% of past-day coffee cups were served cold, up 60% from winter 2023.
• It's no surprise that 84% of Americans have their coffee in the morning with breakfast. A huge 76% of Americans say coffee wakes them up and gets them going.

It’s a good idea to get these deals now because coffee prices are rising fast, according to Nick Becharas, CEO of Highland Park-Becharas Brothers Coffee Co.

"It's a perfect storm with so many factors," Becharas said. "You have a drought in Brazil; there's no rain. We are coming off a drought in Vietnam, and there is historically low inventory in U.S. warehouses."

Becharas added that there is the "Oct. 1 potential strike with the international longshoreman union."

When it comes to coffee, Detroit isn’t a hot spot for the brew, according to personal finance website WalletHub's 2024 list of the 100 Best Coffee Cities. In fact, Detroit ranks close to last at No. 96 on the list. Coming in at No. 100 is Laredo, Texas.

Detroit also spends the least amount on coffee, ranking at 100 on the list. Topping the list is Fremont, California, with the highest average annual spend on coffee — nearly four times higher than in Detroit.

Here’s a sampling of not-to-miss National Coffee Day deals in metro Detroit and beyond. Many of these coffee deals are available only at participating locations and require downloading an app or joining a loyalty or reward program.

Biggby Coffee

Receive a free 16-ounce hot or iced brewed coffee using your registered Biggby card. When you use your card you will also be entered for a chance to win a share of $50,000 in digital gift card prizes being offered by East Lansing-based Biggby Coffee. Biggby’s sweepstakes runs one day, beginning at midnight and ending at 11:59 a.m. on Sunday.

Caribou Coffee

Caribou Coffee honors National Coffee Day on Sunday plus an added week of savings. On Sunday, Caribou Coffee offers a free medium cold press or hot coffee with purchase of another beverage or a 16-ounce bag of coffee beans. Starting Monday, Caribou kicks off Caribou Perks Appreciation Week for loyalty members. Each day through Oct. 4 has a different discount. For example, on Monday members receive a large drink for the price of a medium. Thursday is 20% off food. Some exclusions apply. For info visit cariboucoffee.com/perks .

Dunkin’

Nationwide chain Dunkin’ offers a free hot or iced coffee with any purchase for its Dunkin' Rewards members. Limit one per member.

Krispy Kreme

All guests receive a medium hot or iced coffee with any purchase. In addition to the free coffee, Krispy Kreme is adding a sweet offer of $2 for a dozen of its original glazed doughnuts with the purchase of any dozen. The offer is available in stores, drive-thru and for pickup or delivery at krispykreme.com or through its mobile app using promo codes COFFEE and BOGO2 while supplies last.

Paris Baguette

PB Rewards members get a free medium hot or iced brewed coffee with purchase Friday-Sunday brewed with Lavazza coffee.

Pilot Flying J

Free, any size hot, iced or cold-brewed coffee will be available all day on National Coffee Day. Redeem the free coffee through the myRewards Plus app at participating Pilot and Flying J travel centers. Pilot's new coffee fall flavors include Bourbon Pecan hot coffee, Cinnamon Roll cold brew and Cinnamon Pumpkin Spice cappuccino.

Sheetz

Any size cold brew, including its new Pumpkin Pie brew, is 99 cents through the Sheetz app. Sheetz is a gas station chain known as a convenience store with made-to-order food and beverages. The first Michigan Sheetz opened in Romulus in August.

Starbucks

From 10 a.m.-noon on Sunday, Starbucks is partnering with music duo Sofi Tukker to host a special Twitch livestream DJ set, “At Home with Sofi Tukker,” to inspire and connect loved ones over coffee and music. Starbucks also offers $10 off eligible Starbucks coffee at-home products on Amazon with every $50 purchase while supplies last through Sunday.

Tim Hortons

Tims Reward members receive a free medium hot or iced coffee Friday-Sunday with any purchase. The offer is valid at participating locations and can be redeemed once.
