INSIDE THE TIGERS: Detroit Tigers roster prediction for playoffs wild-card series

Game notes: The Tigers’ postseason path got a little clearer Saturday night when the Kansas City Royals lost to the Braves in Atlanta to stay a game back in the AL wild-card race. That means the Tigers can lock up a trip to No. 4 seed Baltimore with a victory over the White Sox — or with another Royals loss to the Braves, who can clinch the No. 5 seed in the NL with a win. If the Tigers lose, and the Royals win, though, it’ll be a trip to Houston as the No. 6 seed to face Justin Verlander, Hunter Brown and Alex Bregman. (For the ALDS round, it’s the winner of the 4/5 matchup facing the top-seeded Yankees in New York and the winner of the 3/6 matchup heading to Cleveland to face the Guardians.)

But that’s next week’s action; the Tigers face White Sox righty Jonathan Cannon for the third time this season; the first two went pretty solidly Detroit’s way, with Cannon getting tagged for eight runs in just one inning on June 23 in Detroit and giving up five in four innings in Chicago on Aug. 25. Those were both Tigers wins, as you’d probably expect against a team with an MLB-record 121 losses this season.

And then? For the first time in a decade, it’s the playoffs!
