Voters in Michigan and across the U.S. will get another chance to hear directly from candidates on the presidential ballot before the Nov. 5 election, as U.S. Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will participate in the CBS News vice presidential debate Tuesday.
Vance, former President Donald Trump's running mate on the Republican ticket, and Walz, the running mate of Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, are meeting as absentee ballots are available to voters in Michigan. Both candidates have made numerous visits to the state in recent weeks, including Walz campaigning in Ann Arbor on Saturday . Vance is slated to make two stops in Michigan, in Auburn Hills and Marne, on Wednesday.

What time is the vice presidential debate?
Tuesday's vice presidential debate is scheduled to start at 9 p.m.
How can I watch the vice presidential debate?
CBS News is hosting Tuesday's debate. Along with its cable channel (WWJ-TV in Detroit), CBS' streaming platform Paramount+ also will broadcast the debate.
Other networks, including ABC, FOX, NBC and PBS are also scheduled to simultaneously broadcast the debate. Viewers can also tune in on a host of streaming channels. You can also watch the debate on USA TODAY's YouTube channel .
What else should I know about Tuesday's vice presidential debate?
The debate will be moderated by "CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell and "Face the Nation" moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan.
The debate is scheduled for 90 minutes, including two four-minute commercial breaks. Like the two presidential debates, there won't be a live audience in the New York studio where it's taking place.
Unlike the presidential debates, however, the candidates' microphones won't be muted while the other is responding to questions. CBS News states the moderators can mute either candidate's microphone at any time.
Michigan, despite not being picked to host a debate this election cycle , will still play a role in Tuesday's debate at least: Walz has been prepping for the debate in northern Michigan, choosing Harbor Springs as a practice site .
Will this be the final debate before the election?
As things stand, Tuesday's debate between Vance and Walz is likely the final debate, either between the presidential candidates and their running mates, before Election Day on Nov. 5.
Harris and Trump met for a debate in September but, so far, have not agreed on a second debate. While the Harris campaign called for a second debate shortly after the first one ended, Trump has said he would not agree to another debate. CBS previously offered to host another debate between Harris and Trump in October.
At the time this article was being written, Tuesday's debate in New York is the only one scheduled between Vance and Walz.
Trump also participated in a debate with President Joe Biden in June, weeks before Biden announced he would not seek reelection this fall. Biden's poor performance in that debate spurred calls from many Democrats for him to step aside, paving the way for Harris to receive the Democratic nomination.
