It won't impact your chances of watching the Detroit Tigers 2024 postseason run, but the future TV home of the 2025 Tigers could change.

In a status conference for federal bankruptcy court Wednesday, Diamond Sports Group, the parent company of Bally Sports which televises the Tigers in Detroit, said it plans to continue a broadcasting partnership with one MLB team, the Atlanta Braves.

Diamond dropped the contract with two of the eight teams they are re-negotiating with, the Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays, who will either have to renegotiate a new deal or find a new broadcasting home, according to The Athletic's Evan Drellich . The other teams could not be dropped today and renegotiating with Diamond, per the report.

According to the report, MLB did not know this was coming and is actively fighting the proceeding in court. It is unclear at this point whether Diamond will be able to drop the rest of its broadcasting packages or not.

In August, Diamond reached a new deal to carry the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons for the 2024-25 seasons. The Tigers were already under contract to have their broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit 2025 before Wednesday's developments potentially upended that. The Tigers broadcasters, headlined by play-by-play broadcaster Jason Benetti, shouldn't be impacted since their contracts are directly with the team.

The network was dropped from Xfinity cable packages for three months of the 2024 MLB season over a carriage dispute, but struck a deal with Xfinity (owned by Comcast) at the end of July. The Tigers returned on Xfinity starting in August, just in time for a dramatic playoff push .

ON THE REAL DIAMOND: Detroit Tigers Game 1 win a building block for the future — like, today

Diamond, a subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group that operated the Bally-branded regional sports networks, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2023. It was ordered that spring to pay four MLB teams 50% of unpaid media rights fees that were owed to them. Since Diamond is filing for bankruptcy, it can assume and reject certain contracts during that process.
