ARLINGTON, Texas — Aidan Hutchinson underwent surgery to repair the fractured tibia and fibula he suffered in Sunday's win over the Dallas Cowboys , and the Detroit Lions said Monday there is no immediate timetable for his return.

Hutchinson was injured with 11:43 left in the third quarter when his left leg whipped into teammate Alim McNeill as he sacked Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Hutchinson released Prescott from his grasp as he fell to the ground, and players from both teams gathered around him as he was tended to by medical personnel at AT&T Stadium.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Sunday that Hutchinson would spend the night at a Dallas hospital .

"He was in pain, but we were just telling him we got his back, we’re going to play for Hutch and I feel like we did that," McNeill said. "It kind of threw everybody off in the middle of the game like that. Definitely we told him we’re playing for Hutch for sure. That was just scary to see."

McNeill said he did not initially know he hit Hutchinson's leg while it was in the air.

"I didn’t know if it was him or not, but I did feel somebody like leg whip me and then I seen Hutch down and I was like, 'Was it Hutch?'" McNeill said. "So I haven’t seen it myself, so it was me? That’s crazy. Yeah, that’s just wild to see. I hate that for him. I’m wishing the best for sure."

The Lions posted a medical update on social media at 10:15 a.m. Monday, saying Hutchinson "underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured tibia and fibula at Baylor White Medical Center in Irving, Texas," on Sunday. The tibia (shin bone) and fibula (calf bone) are both in the lower leg.

"Hutchinson will return to Detroit this week and is expected to make a full recovery," the statement read. "There is no timeline for his return to play at this time."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports a rod was placed in Hutchinson's leg during the surgery and that his season is over with the injury typically taking a six-to-eight-month recovery.

Hutchinson fractured his lower right leg in 2020 at Michigan during his junior season.

Hutchinson leads the NFL with 7½ sacks and the Lions are 4-1 heading into this week's NFC North showdown with the undefeated Minnesota Vikings (5-0) . The Lions have three games remaining before the NFL trade deadline Nov. 5, after Week 9 .
