Detroit Red Wings, trying to get on track, call up 2022 first-rounder Marco Kasper

Marco Kasper is getting his chance to stick with the Detroit Red Wings.

The 2022 first-round pick had an outstanding exhibition season, but a roster crunch got him a ticket to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Now a week into the regular season, the Wings are 1-3-0, and Kasper looks like someone who can help them.

The Wings called up Kasper under emergency conditions. Tyler Motte, who absorbed a big hit in Thursday's 5-2, at home to the Rangers , did not skate Friday. Neither did Andrew Copp, who missed Thursday's morning skate because of illness.

The Wings leave Friday afternoon for a two-game trip that has them at the Nashville Predators Saturday and at the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

The Wings made the call-up ahead of Friday's practice, so there's more to come on this story this afternoon. But coach Derek Lalonde said earlier this week that Kasper would only be called up if it was for a longer stretch – for example, when the Wings needed a forward for Monday's game at the New York Rangers, they looked to veteran Austin Watson, because they don't want to yo-yo their prospects.

Kasper, 20, is a skilled forward who plays to his 6 foot 1, 192 pound size – he isn't afraid to get his nose dirty, and has a good touch around the net.
