Alex Lyon came through with 37 saves as the Detroit Red Wings banked a much-needed pair of points on the road.

For the second time in a week, the Wings defeated the winless Nashville Predators, with Saturday's outing at Bridgestone Arena ending with a 5-2 final in the Wings' favor. Defenseman Simon Edvinsson scored into an empty net with 1:17 to play in regulation to secure Detroit's second victory of the season.

Andrew Copp also benefited from Nashville's desperation, scoring an empty-net goal with 41.7 seconds on the clock.

THE NEW GUY: Red Wings call up Marco Kasper: Here's what's going on, what to expect

Joe Veleno gave the Wings (2-3-0) their second lead of the game early in the third period when he wheeled across the slot and fired a shot that deflected in off Andrew Copp. The Predators pulled goalie Juuse Saros with two-plus minutes to play to have an extra skater.

    Mr. 1,000 scores early

Luke Schenn, who was honored before the game for playing 1,000 NHL games, scored at 8:48, giving the Predators a 1-0 lead when he took a shot from just inside the blue line. The puck appeared to redirect past Lyon. The Wings tied the game at 13:26 when Vladimir Tarasenko scored his second goal of the season. Marco Kasper, called up Friday and making his season debut, pounced on the puck after Jonatan Berggren was double-teamed in a corner, and set up Tarasenko's marker.

The Wings took a lead 3:16 into the game, converting while Marc del Gaizo was in the box for hooking Patrick Kane. Kane fired a pass to Alex DeBrincat; Saros stopped that shot, but Dylan Larkin converted on a rebound.

The Predators evened the game in the first minute of the third period, when offseason acquisition Steven Stamkos produced his first point of the season when he scored on a power play.

The Predators, an early Stanley Cup favorite, dropped to 0-5-0 to start the season. The Wings defeated the Preds, 3-0, on Oct. 12 on the strength of 42 saves from Cam Talbot.
