The Baltimore Harbor Tunnel was closed for about 20 minutes on Thursday in both directions because a car broke down in the southbound tunnel, according to John Sales of the Maryland Transportation Authority.

In a brief phone call on Friday, Sales said one side of the tunnel is always closed for repairs like pothole filling and cleaning overnight Monday through Thursday after 9 p.m. The open tunnel then has one southbound and one northbound lane. Both tunnels reopen no later than 4 a.m., he added.

Sales was unsure what type of car was stranded inside the tunnel, but said he would have been notified if a truck became stuck.
