Staying safe while trick-or-treating this Halloween

By Contributed by the Baltimore County Police Department,

As Halloween approaches, the Baltimore County Police Department is reminding all residents to prioritize safety. One of the safest ways to celebrate is to attend a sponsored, supervised event. A list of events sponsored by the Baltimore County Police Department is available below. In addition to sponsored events at your local precinct many community associations and churches have family-friendly Halloween events scheduled.

If children plan to trick-or-treat door to door, the Baltimore County Police Department offers the following safety tips to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Halloween.

For Parents and Trick or Treaters:

If you’re handing out candy, turn on outside lights, and remove any hazardous objects from your yard.Do not approach homes that are not lit.Stay on the sidewalks, not the streets, and avoid backyards, shortcuts, and alleys.Emergency identification information should be placed discreetly inside small children's clothing, in case of accidental separation.Encourage children to trick-or-treat with a group, and before dark. An adult chaperone should carry a flashlight and choose well-lighted streets.Wear short costumes, snug and flame retardant; wear light colors or reflective tape; avoid masks that can obstruct vision.Remind children not to eat treats before parents have inspected them; never eat candy that has been opened.Teach children they should NEVER go inside a stranger’s home or car.

    For motorists:

Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.Be alert to children who may be excited and dart into the street.
